Second Conclave of the Greater and Lesser Ainur

< First Ainur Council      < Previous Vána & Linfëa      < Previous Nienna

Slowly the Greater and Lesser Ainur found their seats.  Eonwë rises and clears his throat.  Arien watches Ossë pace.  He's a restless sea waiting to storm.  Ulmo turns to look upon the Herald of Manwë.

"On behalf of his magnificence, Lord Manwë, High King of the Valar, I welcome you to this second council. Alas, I regret to report that my Lord may not attend this evening. Thus, I call this meeting to order in his name." Ulmo bows his head to respect for Eonwë. "Hail, Eonwë, voice of Manwë, Lord of the Valar."  Eonwë bows to Lord Ulmo.

Ulmo continues to speak. "In truth, I can imagine much occupies his thoughts, seeing the darkness which swirls ever present in the mortal world."

"Do we know anything more about this darkness?" ask Nienna.

"Sailors pray to me, those that know my name, as though the seas would swallow them whole.  How came they to fear me, I cannot imagine," answers Ulmo.

"That is terrible."

Ulmo gives a slight shrug. "For many, many seasons, my name was unspoken among the world of elves and men...I do no know what inspires this fear. "

Nienna turns to the Ainu Linfëa. "And yet, Linfëa, I saw you use the waters of the oceans to beat back the terrible flowers in Vána's garden."  Arien listens carefully. Eonwë listens with great concern.

But Linfëa rises. "I fear I have been called away . .  I will return if possible, please forgive me."

"Return soon," said Nienna. Ulmo turns his gave upon the Ainu Linfëa, nods as she is called away upon a mission of Manwë. Nienna continues.  "She did indeed use Ulmo's waters, to great success.  And I have not heard of any more strange occurrences in Vána's garden. Not that anything should ever have been able to get in there."

Ulmo nods slightly.  "Vána's garden?  More has happened since last we met?"

"Not that I have heard. No more problems, I mean."

"With the garden you mean," interjected Arien. Ulmo nods curtly, brow furrowed and lips pressed tight. "True," answers Nienna, "no more problems with the garden.  The rest of the world is a different matter, alas."

"My watery world is unchanged," Ulmo states.  Ulmo turns to Ossë and beckons him forward.  "But Ossë has walked among the mortal shores.  He shadows the Teleri king."  Ossë speaks up. "I have walked all the beaches of the lands of middle earth. They appear to me unharmed but quiet. Alas, perhaps, too quiet."

Ossë continues. "But for this observation, I fear I cannot recall any event that led me to see any signs of such a terrible darkness. The teleri king himself fares well, but his mind is fraught with many worries. His people are slow to return."

"Thus our own Undying Lands were invaded while the mortal world fares well?"  Ulmo's face clouds with anger.

"The Teleri people are returning?  At our last meeting, all were missing."  Nienna looks to Ossë. Ossë shrugs dismissively. "I cannot account for everything, only what I myself can know. And I know of no darkness, that I can myself account for."

Ulmo turns to listen to Ossë.  "But you say his people are slow to return?  From whence came they?" Ossë glances at Nienna "It seems the kings personal guard, his grand daughter and a few others have made their way back to Teleri shores. Or so I believe"

"That is something," Nienna replies.

"I recall some merchant came from sea by boat, saying of other missing children."

"As Ulmo asked, where have they been?

"His granddaughter came from the mainland, or some such. The guard speaks rarely if at all; no word can be said of his entry back onto Teleri soil."

"Yet that darkness lifts a little, if even a few of the people return.  Such a mystery."

Ossë looks impatient, if the sea can look impatient and mutters like a crashing wave "... am I some kind of spy... to say all that has passed there?! Have I not other pressing matters aside from the coming and going of a few children?"

Ulmo turns a sea cold gaze upon the Water Lord.  "Forget you not where you sit, sirrah." Ossë makes a face and mutters to himself, picking up his pacing again. Nienna shakes her head at how an Ainu could be so impatient. Ulmo sighs.  "Centuries change not his nature." Ulmo speaks again. "There is also a sailor.....his prayers reached my ears."  Arien looks to the assembly with her fiery eyes: It seems as if they have been scattered among many lands.

Nienna asks Ossë, "No new atrocities have been seen in the outer world?"

"I witness nothing of the kind. Even the dragons that visited the sea elves have not been seen in many moons."

"Nor those balrogs?  There were rumors they were loose."

Ulmo crosses his arms.  "It is as the calm before a great sea storm,"

"Had they not been dealt with?" asks Ossë.  "Balrogs?" echoes Ulmo.  Ossë looks interested, his gleaming eyes widening "... Storm? Where is the storm!?" Excitement carrying in his voice. Arien hears the faint hiss as Ossë's mist  comes close to her and evaporate: "The balrogs continue to harass and attack the elves of several realms"

"It seems unlikely any of the Children could deal with a balrog," muses Nienna.

Eonwë speaks up. "Clearly not.....the Noldor were never able to." Ulmo nods in agreement with Nienna.  He turns to Lady Arien.  "What else has your fiery eyes seen, sister?"   Arien looks down and bite her lower lip: "My lord...the darkness...it it there...I have felt his stare."

Mandos, sitting beside his sister, spoke. "I also have noticed disturbances within the spirits, an awakening of sorts."

Ulmo feels the heat radiating from the Mair of Varda, the moisture sucked from his very skin and pulls away.  "Mighty it must be to pierce the brightness of the day orb." Nienna looks worried.  Melkor grows stronger?  Stays he in his prison?
[
"As I guide the sun to the est, there are times when I feel a familiar shiver run through me as when I tended the golden tree...I came to loathe the look he gave me."

"This did not happen before?" asked Nienna.

"It is my understanding that Melkor yet lies in prison," Eonwë says. "But I feel his spirit stir, he may be imprisoned, but his works stretch far beyond it's walls." replies Mandos.

"Indeed, Brother," said Nienna to Mandos.  To the others, she says,"Yet it is not good news if Lady Arien is feeling his attention."

Ulmo nods at Eonwë's words, and then then, absently at Nienna and Mandos' as well. "This would not be new for him, for he has managed such feats before," Eowne continues.
Arien feels her mood darken as her eyes glow with flames: "It was also my understanding, thus, too."

"We must be wary of it," cautions Eowne.  Ulmo agrees, "Indeed, Herald of Manwë, you have it aright."

Nienna adds, "Yes, and at those times, he worked much mischief, while we thought all was safe." Eowne nods. Ulmo turned to Mandos. "Doomsman, has any of the Teleri entered your halls?"

"None. Lord Ulmo, have passed my Doors into my Halls of Honour." Arien speaks. "I feel his gaze, and if he is not yet free, his will is fixed on such a purpose as to bring darkness once again"

Nienna adds, "His will is always to bring darkness." Ulmo starts nearer to the Maia of the sun but stops, nodding, his fins twitching and his fists clenching.

"Melkor's devices has no bounds. Perhaps he had enacted new mischief to contain the souls of the Teleri," says Mandos.

"We cannot battle him if he is not in corporeal form with which to engage. But shall we suffer darkness upon the world of the Children?" asks Ulmo.

"That is a troubling idea," says Nienna.

Ulmo turned to the Lord of sea"Ossë, you said the Teleri king is still troubled in his sleep. Night mares or directives from Irmo, I wonder?"

Nienna interjects. "Irmo has in the past given the king directives.  But I have not spoken to my brother recently.  I no nothing of these new dreams "

Ossë adds. "I am not sure of their nature, mere that he dreams of portents, but if they are merely nightmares, of his own creations, or impregnations of Irmo in his mind, that is not something I am privy to. Whatever their source, their presence keeps him up during the dark-hours."

Ulmo paces, his eyes flashing , nostrils flared.  "Melkor has wrought destruction over and over again...shall  we tolerate yet another time?  We held ourselves apart the last time, and look what he unleashed upon the creation of Ilúvatar."

Ossë answers back. "We are not keeping apart this time, but what can be done against an enemy we cannot strike. An enemy we have already imprisoned?"

Nienna asks,"What action would you suggest, Lord Ulmo?" Ulmo stops in his tracks. Linfëa who had returned silently once again gathers her winds around her. Arien trembles slightly, remembering the leering of the dark lord and his eventual treachery in the golden tree she cared for and loved "If we wait until he comes to full power, it may be too late" Eonwë fingers the handle on his sword, thinking of another go at Melkor, but knowing better than to voice the opinion.

Ulmo asks, "Can we not walk the mortal world and crush his minions?" "And yet who are his minions? Know you their names, whereabouts, faces?" asks Ossë.

Eonwë adds, "Would that not simply delay him?"  Arien follow up with "His minions are the balrogs, elementals and other creatures of powers of darkness"

Ulmo heaves a sigh. "Ossë is right."  He casts a look at the Ainur. "Though I shall not hear the end of it to admit he is...this time."

Ossë continues. "Speak what you know, and this moment I and Eonwë and any others who wish it may go to crush their very lives and all that they fester!" He pauses and grins at Ulmo's words, the waters parting to reveal perfect pearl 'teeth', gleaming

Nienna points out, "Who is it who whispers lies to your sailors?  How could you identify such a one?"

Eonwë nods to Ossë..."For my part, I would stand at your side, but I expect there will be a price to be paid for such a measure."

Mandos adds,"But then there is the matter of the Teleri spirits. Defeating Melkor's minions may not bring them to my halls."

Ossë rejoins, "If we do as we should and better, the price will be paid by the minions of Melkor and he himself, and not us."

Nienna adds her concern. "If the Teleri are not dead, then we do not want to hurry them to the Halls"  Ulmo looks at her. "You fear that?"

Mandos, too, speaks, "If they are dead, but if they are simply missing we do not know."

Ulmo muses aloud. "Is it still the will of Ilúvatar that Melkor be not utterly destroyed, such that his vile evil be forever wiped?" Nienna frowns.  "Have we the power to utterly destroy an Ainu?"

Eowne answers her. "Combined, perhaps.....but Lord Ulmo brings an interesting question to ponder. Only Ilúvatar himself could answer this."

"As the great creator... he would not condone a great destruction of his  very first creations," Ossë clenches his first around his trident.

Mandos offers, "Destroying Melkor may bring about unforeseen changes. Ones we could not predict regarding the balance of nature."  Eonwë nods in agreement.

Ossë adds, "As much as we will suffer by his hand, for his survival."  Arien looks down sadly

"Melkor is of the same nature as we are.  Perhaps it is not our place, nor within our power, to destroy him," suggests Nienna. "He is bound to the fate of Ea, just as we are." Ossë grumbles. " But neither can we allow his power to reign on Arda," Arien points out.

Ulmo speaks. "Then should we amass and descend to the mortal world to at least crush his supporters, wherever they are found?" Eonwë closes his eyes for a moment, receiving the word of Lord Manwë in this matter.

"What, crush those of the Children he has deluded?" asks Nienna. Ossë answers, "There is no will I know of Ilúvatar's that would want those vile things to live. This, at least, is in our power and we may do it as we must to protect Ea"

Eonwë rises."My Lord speaks." Arien listens. Ulmo falls silent and back away, head bowed. Mandos listens.  Eonwë continues. "Be it known that any who so wish to join in arms in this war may do so, with this condition: That they be limited to taking an Elven form, becoming mortal, and thus having only their strength and abilities. There are exceptions, however."

Ulmo's face darkens as he listens, silent. Nienna ponders this unusual condition. Ossë rages, throwing his fist up "And so that we, as they cannot, may not defeat them either!"

"'As I said, there is an exception, Lord Ossë." says the Herald of Manwë. Ossë glares but listens.  Arien ponders and listens
"Should any find that they must directly battle balrogs or other fallen Ainu, then and only then may they exhibit their full powers. This is Ilúvatar's will, according to My Lord." Eonwë resumes his seat.

Ossë holds up his trident, caressing along the slim length of it. "... This... I will agree to...." a gleam in his eyes, entirely too obvious.  Mandos nods, his head still bowed. Nienna smiles, imagining Lord Tulkas, or Ossë, searching out balrogs to fight
Ulmo speaks, his voice a rumble, like the crashing of waves. "Thus, even the seas are made clear as a path by which dark things may seek out the Children of light and wage war."  He sighs and bows his head..."But the will of Ilúvatar be done."

" And we who are not suited for fighting?  What do we do? Brother Namo, what will you do?" Nienna turns to Mandos.

Ossë answers. "In all war there is many roles, Nienna. There will be grief, and much need for compassion. In this, the affairs of war, you are but the best suited."

"There is grief now."

"All else are but weapons by which your gifts are needed." Ulmo crosses the way as though upon calm seas. "Bring hope, compassion, love, belief."

"There are ways of subduing the enemy other than fighting. I shall seek out this path." Mandos turns to his sister. Eonwë thinks there will be grief until the shadow falls. Arien continues to ponder as the fire lights in her eyes "I know what I will do."

"I do hope you will continue to guide the Sun!." exclaims, Nienna.

Ossë grins at Arien "We can be so destructive. It is only such a pity we cannot be a pair of powerful forces you and I"

Arien answers Nienna. "I will continue to guide the sun, but will seek out a child of Ilúvatar to fight in my stead...and will imbue him with an inner fire" Ossë stops a moment... considers that better "... I lie... With restraint, as a force unified, we can be rather effective...."

Ulmo turns to Eonwë. "I see the wisdom of this, Lord Herald." He contemplates the circle of Ainur.  "Were we to descend as we are, we would be seen as gods, and thus perhaps, in our minds, consider ourselves to  be such, in time."

Mandos continues to speak to his sister, Nienna. "Perhaps, my sister, we can seek out a way to help the Teleri King and the Children as they face this new terror. We must raise their morale in these dark times."

Ulmo speaks."We cannot fall to the conceit of Melkor, that we are such beings of power to rival the song that brought Ea into creation."

Nienna adds, "Force is Melkor's weapon."   Arien nods. "I agree that such pride is what makes Melkor what he is."

Ulmo looks at the brother and sister. "Mandos, Nienna, I think your task, hardest and most crucial, to keep hope alive."

Eonwë leans over to Arien after her comment is made...."My sister, I believe one already acts in your service.   Perhaps he may do."

Ulmo turns to the Herald of Manwë. " Eonwë, are we prohibited from encouraging  heroes to step forward, for providing our guidance and our wisdom?  Those of us who have such to give," he glances briefly at Ossë with a long suffering smile. Ossë looks at Ulmo, dead pan, looking not at all plussed by his words and obvious glances.

Eonwë answers the Lord of the Seas. "Of that I am not certain.   I would at needs have to address this to My Lord."
Arien smiles at Eonwë: "My thoughts exactly...Ulmo you yourself have offered wisdom and guidance at need."  Ulmo bestows a smile upon Arien.  Sky and water parts us, but not our thoughts on this." Ossë bristles a little, but keeps his thoughts to himself.

"I ask that you do, Good Herald." Eonwë nods.  Nienna asks the assembly, "Have we not always given wisdom and advice to those who would listen?" She turns again to Mandos. "Do you think, brother, that we should visit these Teleri?  Irmo seemed to favor them, as important in the battle against the darkness." He continues thoughtfully. "I would, were I able, to foster a hero among the Children. That, I have never done."

Mandos answers his sister. "Sister, I agree whole heartedly. These Teleri stand at the front of war. We must stand with them."

" We have been too distant from the Outer World," ventured Nienna.

Ulmo nods. "I have moved Alqualondë and made it an island in the mortal world.  I would strengthen the arm and resolve of the Swordmaidens of the Teleri, and bid Ossë continue in disguise to guard the Teleri King."  Nienna hopes the Teleri king is not a nervous sort, who is put off by a pacing guard.

Arien feels a fire of hope within her grow: "Yes! If we can strengthen the children if Ilúvatar to greater courage and greater strength...just as Ilúvatar does with each of us...this would be a great gift to them!"

Eonwë speaks. "Then it is settled for now." Ulmo nods in agreement. Mandos adds,"This is our world as it is theirs, we stand with the Teleri. We are bound to their fate."

Eonwë rises and says, "And so be it.  The Will of Ilúvatar be done!"

Olwe meets with Dame Naeya of Lannell

< Prev  Alqualondë     < Prev  Lanell
AelKennyr Rhiano

Night lies like a blanket upon the haven of the Teleri elves. Soft as velvet, the stars like diamonds, Naeya, Diplomat of Lannell turns to the sea merchant who brought her safely to Alqualonde's shores.

Dame Naeya turned to Lord Nole. "Such a wonderous place to come to, and I have heard so much of the King of the Teleri." Nole smiles at the mention of his king.

Upon his throne, the King of the Teleri sits, his thoughts heavy upon his heart, contemplating what must come next...dreading the darkness ahead that will admit no stars. Footsteps upon the gem studded floor of the throne room causes Olwe to raise his head. He peers down the long hall and sees that Nole, wisest of sailors, approaches with another....a female...He smiles a little, and beckons the two to approach.

"My king, I, Nole, have returned. I bring with me Dame Naeya of Lannell, Knight of the Voice." Nole bows before his king.

Olwe's smile broadens at the sound of Nole's voice and his gaze shifts from the Wise and much-trusted sailor-turned-Ambassador the female elf before him. His gaze is kind but measuring, and his voice, when he speaks is gentle. "Hail, my friend Nole. Mae Govannen. Hail to thee, Naeya of Lannell, Knight of the Voice."

"Hantanyel tulesselyanen muinë tár Olwë Teleri (I thank you for seeing me King Olwë of the Teleri)," said Dame Naeya.

Olwe bows his head, his smile shy and warm at the same time. "I thank you, Dame Naeya, for braving the seas to travel here." Naeya looks in awe at the King and incredible beauty of the room.

"Lord Nole took great care of me, I was in very safe hands - but thank you, King Olwe." Nole nods at the mention of his name smiling towards Naeya.

Olwe rises, gracefull, from the throne, and looks back at Nole, giving a bob of his head. "You could be in no better hands than his, my Lady. Among all the sailors, he knows the seas best. "

Naeya smiles at Lord Nole and King Olwe. "I come on behalf of the leader of my order, Dame Ellyanna, to bring greetings and a small gift of friendship" She hands a box to Lord Nole and bows to King Olwe. Nole takes the box from Lady Naeya and ascends to his king. He hands the box to Olwe.

Slowly, Olwe descends, his eyes taking in the manner and dress of the Ambassador. He rest his gaze longest upon her features and at the last step, extends a hand. "We are most glad to welcome you upon the behalf of Dame Ellyanna and do inquire as to her health."

Olwe bows his head and smiles as he takes the box. He holds it in both hands and gives a shy smile. "Please relay my gratitude for this gift."

"Some silver goblets crafted by artisans near Lannell - a small token alas compared to the beauty that surrounds me." She smiles.

Olwe blushes and opens the box...He draws in a breath and slowly raises one of the goblets out of the box. "Such craftsmanship!" He looks the Ambassador in the eyes and replaces the goblet delicately. "My deepest thanks."

Naeya lowers her face and blushes, but raises her eyes and smiles "I shall pass your very kind words and wishs to Dame Ellyanna, King Olwe."

Slowly Olwe opens the satchel at his belt and extracts a circlet with three large pearls. Solemnly he holds the circlet out with both hands to the Ambassador. "Please aceept this upon Dame Elleyann's behalf. This circlet is very precious in the history of the Teleri elves..."he waits for her to take it. Naeya takes the precious gift with both hands outstretched - amazed at the beauty of the gift

"When first the Teleri came to the Undying Lands, Ulmo himself, the Lord of the Sea plucked those pearls from the ocean bed and Lord Aule fashioned the crown. It was the gift of the Valar to the Teleri..." he blushes, looks down a little shyly,"to me. There is not its like in all the world."

"Such an incredible and precious gift King Olwe, to hold a gift created by a Valar... I shall guard it with my life until it reaches Dame Ellyanna"

"Let it represent a pledge between thy people and Alqualonde, as a permament token of friendship and alliance."

"The Knights of Vallen are truely honoured and shall always remember the respect you have given dear King Olwe." She bows deeply.

Olwe bows his head back. "Please, Dear Lady, there is a room here to the side...Come, let us take our ease there as you give me news of your homeland. Fine Chilled Alqualonde wine awaits." He gestures with a sweep of his left hand.

"Lady Ellyanna also wishes me to tell, that should it please you King Olwë, the Knights of Vallen offer our support should you request it."

Naeya smiles. "Thank you. You are very kind. It has been a long journey." Olwe nods as he walks beside her to the audience room off the side of the throne room. "Please, Dame Naeya, have a seat?"

"Thank you, dear King Olwe. Please, after you." She blushes. Olwe replied with a sweep of his hand, blushing in return. "Beauty before age..." he smiles and guides her to a seat.

Naeya: smiles. "If it be the beauty of words then it should surely be yourself."

Olwe blushes and takes the chair not far from her, waiting as Nole, too, joins them. "You are most gracious, my Lady." Nole joins Lady Naeya and King Olwe in the conference room, taking a seat across from his king.

"Forgive my frank stare when you first came into the throne room. I see in your face traces of my elve kin who are still in the Undying lands."

Naeya replies, "Yes, I have kin in the undying lands and through my mother."

"Vanyar?"

"Some Vanyar and some Noldor - my mothers mother did not leave the lands when the Noldor left the undying lands." Naeya lowers her eyes in sorrow.

Olwe leans forward, his eyes mirroring a concern etched on his face. Forehead wrinkling, he asks gently, "How came you to Lannell?"

"My mother nurtured a wish for knowledge, King Olwe. I wished to explore, and the impact that humans were having was something that I wished to know about."

Olwe nodded, sitting back., thoughtful. "It must be the Noldor heritage." His comment is both a little teasing and yet sad at the same time. "They were never content to be still." Nole nods to King Olwe. The sadness melts from his tone, and he smiles in return. "The Atani flourish, as they were to."

Naeya continues. "Humans are many, and elves are few in those lands and yes I am a traveller." She smiles. "When I arrived in Lannell I felt called by a presence and as I was invited to eat and drink by the Knights, the presence grew stronger - I had to settle and follow its calling."

"A presence?"

"A presence which drew me to stop in that land. I felt I needed to offer myself to the aid of that place. As my thoughts became clearer so I identified her as the Goddess Vallen. A presence of healing and to do good in the world"

Olwe nods, listening intently. "That is a noble calling."

"I am sure that the Goddess is interpreted differently in other places, names and concepts change in the human tongue."

Olwe smiles softly. "I do not think Illuvatar is particular regarding by what form or how his love is known." Olwe leans forward. "Please, I do not mean that in a condescending manner."

"Not condescending at all King Olwe - you just speak the truth." Naeya: smiles sadly at the King, "I wish my visit was purely of pleasure, also Lady Ellyanna was very concerned of Lord Nole telling of fell creatures in these lands - as well as in our own lands"

Olwe smiles back for a moment, but the smile fades at her words. He Leans forward and his hand tightens on one arm of the chair. " Fell beasts?"

Naeya looks seriously at the King. "A creature of fire needed to be controlled in Lannel, but perhaps Lord Nole can better describe what he has seen." She turns to Lord Nole.

Olwe turns to Nole...."Balrog?"

Nole nods fearfully. "During one of our port of calls, we found Lady Feamahtar, and she claimed to see a burned region of forest near her outpost, where all the Teleri in that land vanished." Nole clears his throat and then says, "I also had a dream, my king..." Nole is heasatant to continue.

Olwe nods absently, gazing at the floor, eyes unfocused. "If there are Balrog again, walking the earth." He looks up, sharply at Nole, his eyes intent. "What did you dream?" Naeya turns to Nole and listens.

Nole shudders, fearful to delve in the memories of that night. "I dreamt of fire, a creature carrying weapons of living flame. Here in the woods of Alqualonde." tears come to his eyes. "I dreamt of the fall of my new friends, and your fall, my king, to this creature of fire."

Olwe lets his gaze fall from Noland's face..."Did you dream aught else?"

"Nothing, my king. For I awoke from the horror, then sought the solace of the sea that night." Olwe nods slowly.

Olwe's gaze takes in Dame Naeya. "The Balrogs are dangerous, Dame Naeya. They are the precursors to greater evils." Naeya looks concerned at Nole and frowns. "The creature that came to Lannell carried a whip of living flame." She turns her gaze from Nole to Olwe. "King Olwe, the creature was taller than a man or elf, it radiated heat and had short horns on its head"

"Based on Feamahtar's words, Naeya's report and my dream, I fear that it may be.. Balrog," said Nole. Olwe nods. "It sounds like a Balrog. They served a fallen Valar named Melkor. In Quenya, they are called Valarauko, but the Sindar called them Balrogs, and down through the centuries, that name has stuck."

The Ambassador of Laneel smiles half heartedly to the King. "I expect it is because Balrog is quicker to be spoken in warning."

Olwe smiles.."It is more likely because our Sindar settled in Middle Earth, and their tongue spread as they did." He drew in a deep breath and asked, "Dame Naeya, there has been only one sighted in Lannell?"

Naeya smiles. "Yes I believe so, King Olwe. It has been seen several times but has always been of very similar appearance - though seeing it through heat and smoke can make it difficult."

"There have been similar sightings in Comet's realm." Nole looks up at King Olwe. "There are more?" Olwe draws in a deep breath. "So it appears. " He folds his hands in his lap.."Your dreams...they are echoes of the same I have had...sent by Lord Irmo." Nole nods. "Is this a threat that we can hope to contain?"

Olwe turns to Dame Naeya, "I should like to visit Lannell, my Lady. I would know a balrog on sight." Olwe looks at Nole, his face pinched, his lips pressed together. The eyes he turns to him are troubled, serious. "If we do not, both Elves and Atani may vanish forever from this world." Naeya looks surprised and bows her head. "We would be very honoured to have you visit our lands, King Olwe."

Nole nods reassuredly, with a look on his face of determindedness.

"Nole, I should like to first visit my beloved cousin, Comet. I wish to speak with her about these things. We must reach out to our elven kin throughout the lands." Nole nods to his king, his look unwavering. "We can leave anytime." Olwe nods.

Naeya looks King Olwe in the eye. "The Knights of Lannell shall do all that they can to assist in ridding the lands of these evil creatures, King Olwe. Dame Ellyanna made this quite clear."

Olwe turns his gaze to Dame Naeya. "I would like to see Lannell, visit my elven kin, there. We must unite and be of one heart and mind against the evil that approaches."

"King Olwe, I shall travel as quickly as I can to bring word so that we can prepare for your visit, in case evil threatens at that time."

"Thank you, my Lady. Please relay that thanks to the knights."

Nole rose, bowing. "I will have my swanship ready for you my king, and my lady."

Naeya smiles appreciatively to King Olwe and Lord Nole. Olwe nods. "I shall send a swan to my cousin Comet and we shall set sail in three days." He turns to Dame Naeya.. "In the meantime, Alqualonde is a second home to you. Please take your ease and enjoy yourself. The trip home may be a hard one."

"Thank you very much King Olwe. I shall enjoy visiting your merchants before the journey."

Olwe stands and offers a hand to Dame Naeya. "We are blessed with your presence, sweet cousin. Rest well and may your Gentle Goddess continue to keep you."

Naeya smiles at the King. "Nai tielyar nauvar hwesta cana le (May you always have the breeze behind you in your travels)."

"Sére ar alasse (Peace and joy). ar saila, mâlon! (and wisdom, friend!)." Olwe inclines his head in respect to Ambassador.

"The Goddess' blessings for you, King Olwe."

Elenwë Discovers her Heritage

Shawn Daysleeper

Elenwe Morefindesse arrived in Alqualonde, knowing only that she was Teleri, but little else. Meeting Nole at the dock and joining the journey to Alqualonde gave her little time to think about much beyond preparing for possible danger at journey's end. Now that she had been in Alqualonde for a bit, she looked about and wondered.....how do I fit into the Teleri? Who am I?

Nole notices Elenwe and seemed to sense she was concerned. "Greetings mi'lady," he bows. "My Lord, greetings."  She curtsies.

"I hope you are enjoying fair Alqualonde. Perhaps I may be of assistance to you in some way?"  Elenwe is grateful that Nole has noticed what she has not been able to verbalize. "I-I am not sure how to ask. Every things is so wonderful here, but...." her voice trails off.  "I feel so out of place," she finishes in a rush.

Nole smiles and takes Elenwe's hand, nodding. "Yea, we all feel that way when we enter new lands. But, my lady, you are most welcome here. You are Teleri, and are home at last."

"Thank you, my lord. I have wondered about just what my background is. It is as if I appeared from nowhere, with no history. All I know is that, somewhere in my distant memory, someone taught me that I was Teleri. I also remember small bits of song that I somehow know came from Teleri. But, other than that, I know nothing about my heritage."

Nole smiles. "We Teleri are a seafaring folk and have sailed to many places. Sometimes we establish a settlement, which helps enhance our trade. However, our hearts are always with the sea, and in rhythm with the sea. We sing beautifully. We are blessed with wonderful voices. With regards about your heritage we could consult the records within the library. Perhaps there you will find what you seek."

Elenwe's heart beats faster as she realizes that clues to who she is may be within her grasp. "I would, Lord Nole, appreciate your helping me, if you would be so kind. I know not where to even begin."

Nole leads Elenwe into the library of Alqualonde, and to the vast multitude of books and tomes within. Despite being old, the books were pristine and loved by the Teleri. Nole leads Elenwe to a seat at a table, and selects a tome from the shelf. Nole gestures Elenwe to a seat beside him. Elenwe looks around in amazement as Nole leads her into a huge room lined on all sides with books. Elenwe whispers "It's incredible."

Nole smiles to Elenwe and sits beside her. He opens the tome and lays it out between them. The pages were covered with elvish script written by a skilled hand. Nole fingers through the pages, searching intently for the information he desires. Elenwe looks at the writing, unable to decipher the strange letters. Nole pages through the book, obviously confident and searching. She watches as he leafs through the pages.

Nole flips another page, then his finger rests on a line of script. He smiles and looks up at Elenwe. "Here is what we are looking for. These are your parents" He finger follows the script, and reading aloud. "Your mother's name, is Elena, which means From the Stars."

Elenwe's eyes fill with tears. "I never knew my mother, nor my father," she whispers. Looking at the strange writing. She repeats, "Elena, From the Stars." and looks up at Nole, smiling through her tears.

Nole smiles to Elenwe. "And your father's name, is Earello, which means From the Sea." Nole reads silently further, then looks up at Elenwe. "They are strong warriors in the service of our king, and their home is here in Alqualonde."

Elenwe can't believe her ears. "My parents are here?" she gasps.
"I never thought I would see them."  Nole takes Elenwe's hands, tries to smile as he speaks. "They live here, but like the rest of our people, they have vanished." Nole bows his head.

Elenwe bows her head, also, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Vanished. Elena. Earello." Looking up at Nole, she says with a note of defiance in her voice, "No matter what evil threatens the beautiful land of Alqualonde, I will not rest until it is vanquished. Perhaps if I am bold and brave and destroy the evil, I will be free to seek my.... my.....parents." The strange word falls with difficulty from her lips.

Nole tries to comfort his friend Elenwe, but realises no real comfort would come to her until Elena and Earello are before her. "We stand together, my friend."

"Thank you, my Lord, for all your kindness to me. I must redouble my practice with the sword so I can become a skilled swordmaiden, ready to defend Alqualonde from all danger."

Nolë Returns to Alqualondë with the Swordmaidens

The day had dawned hot, and was hotter still, as afternoon rolled across the swanhaven of the Elves.  Sweat crawled, it felt, betwen Olwe's shoulder blades, beneath his armor, but he merely wiped the sweat off his brow and continued to stalk the deer he had spotted in the woods. Carefully, he approaches the buck....part of him mourning that he would soon take the animal's life to sustain his own, but a soft growl from his stomach convinces him otherwise.

Elenwe Morefinesse follows behind Feamahtar, going before Nole as he completes arrival preparations. "Where are we going, Feamahtar? I have never been here and do not know the way."

"Shhhh .. yes I have not either listen.." Feamahtar looks around.  "I shall guide you through the woods to the Castle," says Nole, somewhere behind them both.

Elenwe freezes, listening.  "Wait," cautions Feamahtar," the birds have stopped singing.  Something is disturbing them."

"We must proceed slowly," cautions Nole.  Feamahtar walks forward slowly, her sword drawn.  "We do not know what has befallen fair Alqualonde since I departed last."

Just then the buck turns his head, startled by voices.  Olwe hears the voices as well and watches the buck bound away. Slowly, narrowing his eyes, he eases the string back ....Straining his eyes, he catches the flash of steel.

"There, Elenwe whispers, "there, through the trees. A buck."  Nole senses something is in the woods.  "Elen, stay back," warns Feamahtar. Elenwe draws her sword. "Could it have been the buck making the sounds you hear, Feamahter?" Her friend answers, "We do not know what dangers are here."  "Be on your guard, my companions," warns Nole.   "Aye, Lord Nole," whispers Elenwe.  "Lord Nole,  perhaps you should draw your weapon."

Slowly,  Olwe drops his bow to the ground and goes for his sword. He advances quietly, pulling his hood up around his face to mask himself. The voices sound elven, but he does not recognize the female voices.  Feamahtar moves slowly forward, ready to rush toward the spot the noise was generated from.  "There," whispers Elenwe, excitedly, "There! That is steel, glinting in the sun!"  Nole nods and proceeds towards the noise in the woods slowly.  Feamahtar moves now swiftly toward the glint of steel.  Elenwe stumbles behind Feamahtar and Nole, wondering why she left the port Nole found her in to die in the woods of Alqualonde.  Now Olwe approaches, hearing Nole, but he does not sheathe his sword.  Time in the mortal world has taught him caution.

Feamahtar prepares herself to defend her comrades. She spots a lone figure and is ready to battle.  Nole speaks quietly, "Slowly now."  Elenwe sees a striking figure in white moving toward them, sword drawn. She advances slowly.  Stepping into the clearing, Olwe beholds a elven maid, slight of form, holding a sword before her.  His eyes take in the grip she has on her blade.  Holding his sword steady, he points the tip at her and speaks in Quenya.  "Declare yourself, maiden."

Feamahtar: runs toward the figure sword raised. "Halt!"  Nole sees the hooded figure and stands in fear. Feamahtar is startled by the language used by the stranger. Olwe eyes the second maid, her rush toward them... His hands are steady, and his voice carries across the woods. "Declare thy self!"

Nole cries out,"Who are you who also uses my toungue?"  Olwe raises his head at the sound of the merchant's voice, and there is a lilt to the voice as he answers, the tone more kind, chiding.  "Know me not, sir?" Nole eyes widen at the kind voice.  Stepping forward,  Elenwe declares," I am Elenwe Morefindesse. I am come from a far land to serve the king of this good land."

Olwe lowers his blade. Then he sheathes it and throws back his hood.  Feamahtar gives a loud sigh. Could it be?  Olwe smiles at the merchant, who returns the smile and bows.
Elenwe stands in amazement as she watches the blade being sheathed.  Olwe chided, "You were gone so long, you forgot my voice, my friend."  Elenwe turns and watches Nole smiling and bowing, hears the other's voice.   Feamahtar steps back and lowers her sword immediately.  "No my king, I have never heard your stern voice before. It was new to my ears."  Elenwe sheaths her sword and gasps when she hears "My King."

A faint blush steals across the king's  face.  "I am sorry for that sterness, see how stalwart and loyal these maidens are."  Nole smiles, "Yes, they are very stalwart."

Elenwe looks at Olwe. "You are he whom we are come to serve." She drops into a low curtsy. "Your Majesty."  Feamahtar bows her head.  "My king." Olwe smiles gently and extends a hand, raising her back up.  He gazes curiously at her.  "Greetings, maid of the Teleri.  I am Olwe."  Nole rises and smiles, so happy to look upon his king's face once again. Olwe turns to the second maid and offers his hand, to help her back up.  "Be at peace and welcome."  Elenwe lLooks up into the kind face, and stammers, "T-thannk you, m-my king. I never dreamt that I should ever have the sight of another Teleri, much less a royal one." Feamahtar, silent, is overcome by extreme emotion to find the one she sought to serve with her sword.

Olwe smiles gently and then turns to Nole. "My lord, you have brought back a bounty, indeed. Nor did I dream that two such fair Teleri were alive in the mortal world," says Olwe.

Elenwe: moves to stand beside Feamahtar, to support her. Nole smiles and bows again. "I know not why our paths had crossed int he mortal world, but it brings joy to my heart that there are more there."

Olwe crosses the distance and places a hand on Nole's shoulder. "I worried so, for you.  When you were overdue, I had great tripidation in my heart.  Thrice blessed is your return, for we have kin again in our blessed lands."  Nole takes Olwe's hand. "I apologise for my delay, and am greatful you are safe. There  is evil at work int he mortal world that some of us have beheld with their own eyes."

Elenwe moves a step forward and says, "My king, we are both ready to serve you, to fight to the death if necessary."  Olwe looks at the maidens, his brow furrowed.  "The solitude has made my forget my manners...Are you tired? Hungry? Thirsty? We can make our way to the pub...I remember the days when it was alive with the sounds of returning sailors."

Elenwe: looks at Feamahtar, concerned. She has come to love her like a sister during the voyage to Alqualonde.  Elenwe turns to the other elven maid. "What say you, Feamahtar? Be ye hungered?"

Olwe squeezes Nole's shoulder consolingly at the merchant's words.  "The Darkness is coming."  Feamahtar: reaches out and touches Elenwe to reassure her ..

Nole: smiles. "Yes, let us go to the pub. Let the memories of returning sailors fill my heart as well."

Olwe smiles after a sadness flits across his face. "Lead on, then, Friend Nole! We have much to celebrate."  He pauses...He turns to the maidens. "After the kinslaying...when we deep in our sorrow....maiden in their grief turned hands once used to better arts to the craft of the sword....Fierce they were in their dedication to protecting this land, their loved ones. Deeply and with great dedication they learned the ways of war and never had any clan had so fierce a group of warriors. For all that I was their king, I tell you now I would have been loathed to face them as enemy."  Nole nods at Olwe's words. "And now, before you stand two of those warriors."

Feamahtar again bows to Olwe. "My king, I failed to protect my friends .. I shall not fail you." Olwe nods and then gently looks into Feamahtar.  "Nay lady. much evil is at work. This none of your doing.  And we SHALL see our people returned to us..." his eyes turn steeely cold..." or shall have retribution."

Elenwe adds, "I hope to become as skillful as they, your majesty. Faemahtar has begun my instruction in the way of the sword."  Feamahtar pulls herself as tall and upright as possible and reaches out and touches Elen shoulder. Elenwe feels Feamahtar's touch and stands tall beside her, head help high.

"Welcome, Swordmaidens, to Alqualonde, home to you by right of birth and kinship.": Slowly, Olwe bows his head.  "Be strong, as thy mothers were strong.  Believe in the goodness of Illuvatar and the Will of the Valar."

"Thank you, my Lord," says Feamahtar, so overcome with emotion that she cannot state her great joy in meeting him.

Nole feels joy in his heart to see two Teleri home in Alqualonde. He has forgotten, at least for a while, that there is great evil at work. He leads the four Teleri to the pub. It was not long before laughter and singing echoed within. Laughter these walls have not heard for a time, too long of a time.

Swordmaidens and the Way of the Sword

Nole Eambar steers his swanship westwards across the sea. By his skill and the grace of the Valar, each day brings the ship and the newly found Teleri closer to Alqualonde. Nole smiles to the teleri on board, hoping they become friends in these dark times. He goes back to work, organising supplies and such that they picked up at their last port of call.

Elenwe wanders the deck, still amazed that she is actually journeying to Alqualonde, noticing Feamahtar sitting and staring out to sea. Elenwe comes near the lone figure watching the sea. She wonders if she should speak first. She is so unsure of how to act or what to say.

Feamahtar notices that she no longer is alone and feels the eyes of someone else on her. Who is this? Another elf?  Feamahtar stands up and ask, "Are you Teleri?" Elenwe answers. "Hello, I am Elenwe. Yes, I am Teleri, and I have come aboard to journey with Lord Nole to Alqualonde. Are you Teleri, My Lady?"

Feamahtar expresses joy on her face "I am Lady Feamahtar. Indeed, and to see you is wonderful"

Elenwe says, "I still cannot believe that I am not alone in this world.  First Lord Nole and now you, Lady Feamahtar. Tell me, are there other Teleri?" Feamahtar nods. "Ahh yes, My Lady, it is, indeed, good to see you also .. a Teleri. My heart is full of joy to see you."

Elenwe smiles at her kinswoman. "Lord Nole spoke of trouble in the homeland. What can you tell me?"

Feamahtar reaches out to ensure that she is not a dream. "Welcome aboard". Elenwe says, "Thank you, so much."  She touches Feamahtar's hand.  Feamahtar replies, "I had no idea that there were more of us on board. It is good to know we finally going forth as many to serve our king." Elenwe nods. "Aye, My Lady, I am eager to serve the king. What can you tell me about the trouble Lord Nole mentioned?"

Feamahtar stutters. "If I only could... but it is a mystery that none have been able to answer for me .. my friends all disappear and I was left..." Elenwe interrupts. "No friends. That is exactly my position....or was, before I met Lord Nole and you, My Lady," Feamahtar continues. "Until Sir Nole found me I thought I was alone without a single Teleri left." Elenwe sighs. "I know not how I will be able to serve the king. I have no fighting skills."

Feamahtar replies. "Ahh, Lady Elenwe I did not know.. I thought you a warrior..." Elenwe shakes her head."No, My Lady, I have spent many a long year wandering in unfriendly ports. Lord Nole says I am needed, all Teleri are needed. And I am ready to do what I can."

Feamahtar displays a pensive expression on her face. "I see. Do you wish to serve your king with a sword, fair lady?" Elenwe exclaims, "Oh, yes, I would. But I must learn the way of a sword, I fear."

"There are many ways to serve our King, and all will be necessary now with so few of us.  But all must now learn the way of the sword to survive this unknown horror." Feamahtar smiles. "I would be honored to help you learn how to protect yourself and also any Teleri. Should you find the sword your way I would welcome you as a fellow sister of the sword."

Elenwe says. "Oh, Lady Feamahter, the honor would be mine." Feamahtar smiles and hugs Elenwe. "it is my honor  and that of the King's.  We all must do what is necessary. Welcome indeed."  Elenwe hugs Feamahter back. "I'm glad, and will do my best."

Feamahtar suggests "Come, let us find you a sword. It is none to soon for you to learn how to protect yourself and all here." Elenwe says, "I'd like that. And I must find suitable garments if I am to learn the way of the sword." Feamahtar suggests, "Perhaps Sir Nole will  help you." Elenwe nods. "Aye, Sire, if you would." Feamahtar nods  and smiles. "And suitable clothing." She laughs the first time in a long time.

Nole speaks. "The ways of the sword. Aye, it has come to that, for there may be unknown horrors awaiting us when we disembark in fair Alqualonde. There are swords a plenty here, but not enough trained hands to use them." Elenwe says, "I want to be ready. My Lady, can we begin soon?" Feamahtar grins, pleased by Lady Elenwe eagerness. "Of course." Elenwe smiles shyly.

Nole hands Lady Elenwe a beautiful sword, crafted long ago by expert hands in the now lost city of Gondolin. A beautiful sword, encrusted with precious gems on the hilt. Elenwe's eyes widen. "Oh my, how beautiful. Thank you, Sire, thank you." Nole says as he hands her the sword, "Perhaps this sword would serve you mi'lady?" Feamahtar nods. "May it serve the Teleri and you well." Elenwe fixes the sword and sheath in place. "Like this?"

Nole smiles as his two new friends work together, learning the way of the sword. He sees them, willing to serve, to die, to protect those whom they love. All the while, his face fills with more concern with each passing league of the journey.

Nole taps his own belt, a beautiful gem studded dagger sheathed there. Nole breathes deeply, happy to serve with his new friends for his king. He steers the swanship westwards and soon the towers of Alqualonde's castle appear faintly on the horizon. "It is now time to come home" mutters the sailor. "Yes, it is time."
