Elwing Awakes to a New Day

< Previous

Cinnamon Raymaker

Elwing awakes to a brand new day and stretches into the luxuriously soft coverings of the bed in which she rests. She looks lazily around the room in which she finds herself, noting the attention to detail in the tapestries and other furnishings adorning the cozy, yet opulent space. Thinking she has too long tarried abed, she throws back the covers and moves to the nearby washstand, filling the marble basin with fresh water from the crystal jug next to it and adding some fragrance from the nearby shelf containing small vials of herbal extracts and oils. Breathing in the sweet perfume she gently douses her face with water, revelling in the feeling of freshness as the perfume pervades her senses. Gently dabbing her face dry with the soft cloth provided, she reaches for one of the gowns from her hastily assembled travel pack, and in doing so she reminisces about her time on the Isle of Vana.

Quickly donning the gossamer-light gown, she reaches for a pearly shell-backed hairbrush and begins combing out the tangles. She then nimbly braids the her hair into one large plait, which falls down the centre of her spine. Glancing at her reflection in the mirror and noting that she looks reasonably presentable to face anyone she may come across in her uncle's land of Alqualonde, she unlatches the door of the chamber and makes her way down through the palace levels to the throne room. Finding it deserted and hearing the echo of her own footsteps clattering around the walls, she is instantly reminded of her childhood home. The bitter, painful memory of the loss of her parents and the feeling of isolation returns to her in a rush of emotion, overwhelming her, making her relive the terror of her youth. Feeling quite overcome, she rushes out to the balcony and takes in huge gasps of fresh air to clear her head and still her senses.

After taking a little time to regain her composure, she looks up and sees the ocean - the one constant in her life. Without hesitation she hurries across the market place to the docks where she had landed just the day before. Her benefactor, the Valar, Lord Ulmo, had brought her to the land of the Teleri. A land which seemed empty and bereft of the valiant seafaring elves who had come to her aid many years before during the events leading to the War of Wrath.  Elwing chooses a rocky outcrop upon which to sit and stares out to sea, thinking of the last time she had wandered this realm.

For some reason, she had been returned to the realm of her great grandfather's brother. She did not know why but was sure that in time the Valar would, in their own way and in their own good time,  reveal the purpose to her. They always had in the past, and she was resigned to the fact that they would continue to do so in the future.
